African Penguin (Spheniscus demersus)

Acrylic and spray paint on canvas. 3.9 x 2.9 feet 1200mm x 890mm Murray Ralfe 2010

African Penguins are found in Southern Africa, they are the only penguins breeding on the African continent. They breed on a number of islands on the southern and west coasts of Southern Africa. Where I grew up in Port Elizabeth, these birds breed on some of the offshore islands. They have pretty sharp beaks, and use them as defence – I still have a scar on my hand from one encounter.

They used to be called the Jackass Penguin – as their call sounds like a donkey braying.
